Kelly’s Landing

lrg_dsc02372One of the great ideological divides of our time is conservative vs. progressive, no, actually even greater is the divide between those who like Manhattan Clam Chowder and those who like New England Clam Chowdah’. Yes, I spelt it that way because that is the way it is properly pronounced. Chow-dah. Just maybe you feel that those who like Clam Chowda’ and Lobsta’ are adherents to the trueness of the seafood ideology. I’m actually more neutral, but I can say with all certainty, that if you want true New England style seafood, you’ll need to journey to Kelly’s Landing in Fort Lauderdale.

In this very popular restaurant, you can find the very best and reasonably priced seafood dishes that are typically only served about 1000 or so miles north of us. lrg_dsc02370Recently we visited with a friend who grew up in Maine, the heartland of New England, known for its picturesque towns, the unique accent, and of course the lobsters. So if anyone knows what New England food should truly taste, look, and smell like, it is our friend. Consider her a ‘taste’ ambassador. And her rating was a 10. Unlike Tom Brady and deflated footballs, – Update: we are only kidding and smack-talking here, please do not take any football comments seriously – there is no cheating here, everything is made to order and 100% authentic. When you come here, plan early, this small place is exceptionally popular and there is always a small wait. But it certainly is worth that wait.

lrg_dsc02375 (1)My favourite dish to get here is the $10 soup and fish & chips. Its a just right size – for me – dish consisting of the amazing clam chowder and a small plate of fish & chips. Our ambassador had the fried clams with sweet potato fries, while my wife had the chowder in a bread bowl. I’m going to have to remember that because that will be my choice for next time. I did have a case – once again – of food lust envy.  By the way just so you know, Manhattan Clam Chowder is tomato based, while New England Clam Chowdah is cream/milk based.
