El Paso II

lrg_dsc01820Driving down US 1 in Hollywood you get to see gems from the heyday of interstate motoring of years gone by and some others like the Circ Hotel which is brand new.

Along the way there are also many fine eateries that often don’t get a second glance; because they are almost hidden in plain sight, casualties of the over signage on Route 1.

One such restaurant is El Paso II. We almost don’t notice it as we were making our way south, but really it should not be missed.

There actually is an El Paso I, by the way, located in Coral Springs, and it’s owned by the same brothers. They started the other one first, in 1999 and then opened this location in 2012.

lrg_dsc02448What looks like a small restaurant is actually quite roomy, with seating for 75. And yes you do want to take a seat here. The food here is surprisingly authentic and down to earth. The service is great too, and they can handle the very loyal repeat customers. Yeah, there’s going to be a lot of people here because the food is that good. That’s why we keep on coming back too.

Your dinner gets started with the tortilla chips. Fresh and warm,  they are a delightful way to begin the experience. Choices range from typical Mexican fare including tacos, burritos, and enchiladas to seafood and more traditional Spanish dishes.

lrg_dsc02447I’d highly recommend the Pollo Senora which is charbroiled chicken and rice with refried beans. Of course, there is lots of cheese on top. You also can’t go wrong with their delicious beef, chicken or cheese enchiladas. In one of my past visits, I had the chicken and shrimp dish called the Arroz Camapollo. It’s a quarter chicken with amazing shrimp. While I always seem to get chicken here, there is a large variety of beef dishes and some awesome seafood.

Pricing here is modest, reflecting the neighborhood’s working-class values. The last thing we need is another expensive restaurant. Keep on driving, but stop here along the way,
