See Thai & Japanese Hallandale

img_2181Sometimes the very best neighboorhood restaurants are tucked away so discreetly that you would never know they existed, even if you lived right next door. But when you do find them, its ‘heaven’, ‘nirvana’, and ‘paradise’ all rolled into one.

On the way back from feeding a friend’s cat — our lives frequently revolve around cats — we just caught the sight of this new to us Thai and Japanese restaurant on Hallandale Blvd. It’s hard to notice but so worth it to eat here.

The food here is first class and way beyond the strip mall image projected from the outside. Meanwhile, the inside is ethnic and traditional. It’s not a place for the trendy and I doubt any glossy Florida magazine would cover it. But here we are…

img_2177It was my first time having Poke, and I was intrigued. Poke seems to be all over the place and I jumped at the chance. So what is Poke anyway? At least in the Spicy Tuna Poke Combo, it was spicy tuna on top of rice with a side of seaweed salad, and lots of tasty avocado. This is a delicious dish and while it has the same ingredients as “regular” sushi, it’s formatted in such a different way that I felt different eating it. Needless to say, I’m giving it a strong recommendation.

img_2179We also had a more traditional JB Roll, which includes cream cheese and salmon. The same way you’d have it on a bagel. Of course instead of a bagel you get to have rice and seaweed wrapping. I also loved the unique Miso soup. It was slightly more hearty than I typically experience. I love it when cooks experiment and come up with their own distinctions on typical dishes.

Because we are not in a trendy restaurant, the pricing is actually very good. Especially for sushi. So I’ll have to give a positive rating and tag on ‘economy meals’ for this review.

There are a lot of hidden restaurants like this all over South Florida, and especially on Hallandale Blvd. We look to visit more of them soon.
