Florida was a far different place in 1947. There were fewer retirees, developments, and much less traffic. But one of the most beautiful parts of Florida was waiting for everyone to come on down.
That “part” of course is the fish and our amazing waterfront.
And that brings us to The Historic Dockers Bar and Grill in Dania Beach. While it certainly has changed over the years, its mission has always remained the same, a restaurant and watering hole for the sailor and landlubber alike and everyone in between.
Service is light and breezy just like the nearby waterways and ocean. It’s a come as you are open and accepting type of place.
The appetizer menu remains classic, albeit with a few modern additions, but I could picture the oysters and peel & eat shrimp being offered back in ’47.
The simple entre menu features classic ocean inspired dishes including scallops, shrimp, lobster, and seasonal fish such as mahi-mahi.
On this visit, my wife and I were on a “double-date” with a co-worker and her husband. Some of us ate lightly, others a bit heavier. My most recent go-to seafood dish has become mussels, which Dockers absolutely got right. My wife (and everyone else) had the New England Clam Chowder which was superb, and our dinner couple shared crab stuffed mushrooms and fish and chips.
Their sandwiches and burgers are great too, so much so that Dockers was put on the top ten list for best burgers in Broward by the Sun-Sentinel.
For a double dinner date or just if you are just sailing solo – especially if you are just visiting the area – stop on into The Historic Dockers for a Florida tradition that you just might come back for every time you are in the area. If you live here, even better, as you can come back that much more often.
