101 Ocean – Our Birthday Destination

lrg_dsc00010 (1)My wife has a lot of friends, like a serious amount, so we seem to attend many birthdays. We both love these birthday gatherings as it brings our ‘groups’ together, and our friends can catch up on the details of our quickly moving lives. I’m often the group photographer too, but that’s another story. lrg_dsc00016

One of our most beloved birthday destinations is 101 Ocean located on the ‘downtown’ strip of Lauderdale-by-the-sea. It’s easy to get to the destination, which is central to the many people we know. Parking is not always convenient in that part of town so plan ahead when you leave, but it’s certainly worth the trip. The neighboorhood makes for a fun after-dinner walk too.

101 Ocean is a destination restaurant. With its huge indoor-outdoor full-service bar and large inside/outside dining areas, there are always a lot of people here. But don’t let that worry you, the well attentive staff is always on top of things. Take my advice:

Come for the drinks and stay for dinner.

lrg_dsc02478I’ve been here several times, each time to celebrate another birthday for one of our many friends. If you can request it, for smaller parties try to get the back room, it’s just a little quieter, and if you have a larger party request to sit near the fish tanks towards the back. These two places make parties just a little more separate from the rest of the tables.

The food here is without a doubt phenomenal. When you have a party, or even if you don’t, start off with a few of their appetizers. In our parties, we’ve shared the mussels bowl with P.E.I. mussels tossed with chorizo and saffron broth, the spinach and crab dip, the fried calamari — definitely one of my favorites, and my go-to light food, sesame crusted Ahi Tuna. lrg_dsc02163

With a lot of friends comes a lot of unique food requirements, some of them are vegetarians, others just don’t eat meat, and others need something light. Here too, 101 Ocean has us covered.  For those who want something “light”, there is the tomato Caprese salad. Topped with their signature Balsamic glaze it’s a work of art and delight to eat. Another great salad is the goat cheese and beet salad. Served with a vinaigrette on top you’ll be sure to be below your weight watchers points.  For a more hearty dish step up to the roasted salmon with toasted orzo or the diver scallops with whipped potatoes and spinach. Of course, you could also get a pizza, just sayin’. lrg_dsc02175

I did mention earlier that they have a large inside-outside bar. You can not go here without at least one drink from the bar or their huge wine selection. I was able to have a Moscow mule on our last visit and my wife and many of her friends indulge in the wine.

If you schedule your birthday celebration correctly (early) then you can take advantage of their happy hour which runs from 5-7pm weekdays. Or you could just come here if you’re in the area and take advantage of this popular neighboorhood spot.

So what happens if it’s not a birthday celebration? Then just visit for dinner or lunch. They also have a brunch on the weekends. I can’t wait for the next birthday celebration.
